KOLHAPUR: Karveer police have arrested a couple for allegedly strangling their daughter-in-law and projecting that she had committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling.
Sardar Ramchandra Patil (54) and his wife Sunita (50), both residents of Jaibhavani colony, Phulewadi, Karveer were arrested for stangling their daughter-in-law Riya Badal Patil (34). The incident came to light after the doctors conducting a post mortem found marks on her neck, which indicated that she was strangled.
"After the medical officers provided us inputs, we detained the couple for interrogation.
Both of them were giving contradictory statements when they were questioned individually. After repeated questioning, they confessed to have committed the crime," said a police officer attached with Karveer police station. "We conducted a post-mortem in the presence of the Karveer tehsildar and have reserved viscera for further investigation," said the officer.
"As per preliminary information, the couple's son Badal fell in love with Riya and married her two years ago. Badal's parents were against the marriage but accepted it after their son threatened to end his life. Before marriage, Riya had undergone a heart surgery and the doctors had stated that she would not become a mother," said the officer.
"Both Patil and his wife were not happy with Riya as she used to fall ill frequently. On Wednesday evening, when Badal was not at home, the couple got hold of Riya and strangulated her to death with a scarf. Later, they hanged her from the ceiling with a rope and pretended that she committed suicide," he said.
The neighbours rushed her to CPR civil hospital where doctors declared her brought dead.
