MUZAFFARPUR: Armed criminals looted Rs 9.5 lakh within a span of one-and-a-half hours from a bank and a fish trader in the district on Friday.
The criminals looted Rs 7 lakh from the Bhikhanpur branch of State Bank of India (SBI) on the outskirts of Muzaffarpur town and Rs 2.5 lakh from a fish trader, Irfan, near Kaithi toll plaza on NH-57 under the Gaighat police station area of the district.
Though Irfan had earlier claimed that Rs 25 lakh was looted from him, Muzaffarpur SSP Manoj Kumar said primary investigations revealed that the fish trader was robbed of Rs 2.5 lakh.
A gang of six criminals entered the Bhikhanpur branch of SBI around 1.30pm and looted Rs 7 lakh in cash after holding the manager, Dilip Goswami, and other employees of the bank hostage at gunpoint.
The robbers, aged between 20 and 25 years, didn’t even spare the customers and forced them to part with their cash and cellphones. The SSP said one of the criminals abandoned a bag containing Rs 75,000 while fleeing the spot. “Police have seized the bag. Raids are on to arrest the criminals involved in the crime,” the SSP said.
The fish trader, on the other hand, was robbed when he was on way to the Maithi branch of Axis Bank to deposit the money. The criminals on three motorcycles intercepted him near the Kaithi toll plaza and looted the cash. DSP (east) Gaurav Pandey said footages of CCTV cameras installed in the area would be scanned to ascertain the identity of the criminals.
