    Onion export below MSP will be stopped, exporters punished: Government

    The government has said that it will punish those onion exporters who reportedly exported onions to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka below MSP. Such an export can create a shortage of onion in the domestic market.

    Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution have added that it will put an end to such export to ensure enough stocks of onions are released in the market.

    Central government imposes stock limit on onion traders

    To tackle the issue of hoarding of the onion by traders, the central government has imposed stock limit on retail and wholesale traders. Now a retail trader will not be able to stock onions beyond 100 quintals while the stock limit for a wholesale trader will be 500 quintals.

    The measure has been taken to ensure that enough onion stocks are released in the market for the benefit of consumers.

    Several hundred prisoners to be released on Gandhi Jayanti

    Several hundred prisoners, who have not been convicted for murder, rape and corruption, will be released from jails across India on October 2 to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, officials said on Sunday.

    The number of prisoners to be released on Gandhi Jayanti could be around 600 and the final list is being prepared by the Union Home Ministry in close coordination with state governments and the union territory administrations.

    According to a Home Ministry official, under the scheme for special remission to prisoners to commemorate 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, so far 1,424 prisoners have been released by states and Union territories in two phases -- on October 2, 2018 and April 6, 2019.

    The third phase of release is due on October 2 and the action is underway by states and UTs, the official said.
