GAYA/NAWADA: At least nine persons died in different incidents in Gaya and Nawada on Sunday. While six people died in wall collapse in different places of Gaya district, three were swept way by Dhanarjay river near Suberleti village under Rajauli police station area in Nawada district.
Gaya has received 250mm rainfall in the last three days, which is more than 20% of the average annual rainfall of 134mm in the district.
All seasonal rivers in the district were in spate. A disaster management control room has also been established in Gaya town for round-the-clock monitoring of the situation. People in distress can call the control room at 0631-2222259.
Of the six deaths, two each were reported from Imamganj and Paraiya police station areas of the district. One eight-year-old child was killed in house collapse at Lohdi under Imamganj police station area while one death was reported from Salaiya panchayat under the same Imamganj police station area and two others from Konch and Atri police station areas.
According to Nawada DM Kaushal Kumar, altogether 5 persons, including a couple, were swept away in the current of Dhanarjay river while they were waiting on one end of a makeshift bamboo bridge for the water level to recede. However, two of them managed to save themselves by holding each other’s hand.
The three who are yet to be traced have been identified as Kailash Bhuiyan of Suberleti village, Jamuna Rajwar of Ekambba village and Gorelal Rajbanshi of Singar village. The DM has pressed divers into search operation. He said road links to Suberleti, Bhaekhap, Kumbhiatri, Marmo, Singar and Chiralla villages had been snapped in the flash flood.
Meanwhile, rainwater entered the Railway Hospital premises in Gaya town. Hospital superintendent Dr D K Sahay, however, said the indoor patients were safe but there was possibility of inundation with continuous rainfall. Also, Durga Bari locality of the town has become inaccessible on account of heavy waterlogging in the area.

Gaya municipal commissioner Sawan Kumar said rainwater was being drained out from the Durga Bari area. “We are trying to find out a permanent solution to waterlogging problem in the area,” he said.
Heavy waterlogging was also reported from Jamuawan panchayat in Wazirganj block on account of blocked water outlets. Truckloads of debris dumped in the water outlet was removed to ease the situation.
Reservoir water level rises by 16 feet in Nawada: Rajauli subdivision in Nawada district continued to witness heavy waterlogging following showers in the last six days. Officials claimed that the water level in Phulwaria reservoir had increased by 16.25 feet over the last 24 hours.
MU degree Part-III exams postponed: The ongoing degree Part-III exams of Magadh University has been postponed in view of heavy rainfall. The exams are being held at 58 centres spread over seven districts, including Patna and Nalanda. About 1.33 lakh students, including students of colleges now tagged to the Pataliputra University, are appearing at the exams. The exams were originally scheduled to end on October 4. Now, the exams are likely to be held after Durga Puja. The exams have been postponed on the orders of VC Prof Rajendra Prasad, said the notification issued by the MU Controller of Examinations.
