Embankments breached at 5 places in Nalanda, Jehanabad
PATNA: The floodwaters of swollen Panchane, Falgu, Bhutahi and Belgaiya rivers together breached four minor embankments of the water resources department (WRD) in Nalanda and one in Jehanabad districts on Monday. River Punpun, on the other hand, continued to sound alarm bells in eastern Patna as it was flowing 217cm above the danger level with no signs of abatement over the next 12 hours.
River Panchane breached the minor embankment near Gobaria in Rahui block of Nalanda district while river Falgu breached one at Keshopur in Ekangarsarai of the same district.
Bhutahi river breached embankment at Parsapar and Raghubigha while river Beldaiya breached the one at Panditpur in Ratni Faridpur block of Jehanabad district.
The Punpun, Falgu and Sakri Panchane basins received 27mm to 74mm rainfall in the last 24 hours till 8.30am on Monday, a WRD bulletin said. Overall, the districts that fall in their basins are Aurangabad, Gaya, Arwal, Jehanabad, Patna, Nalanda, Nawada, Sheikhpura and Lakhisarai.
There was slight respite on Monday, as no heavy rainfall was reported from any district in north and south Bihar, barring some drizzle in Bhagalpur.
Hathidah in Patna district received 104mm rainfall, Basua 113mm), Dhengraghat 126mm, Khagaria 129mm, Jhanjharpur 161mm, Kursela 164mm, Chargharia 198mm, Baltara 222mm and Rosera got 250mm rainfall.
There has been increased discharge of water through rivers Sone, Kosi, Punpun, Gandak and a few others, which has increased the volume of water flowing through the Ganga. In effect, it has also left its water level rising above the red mark. While the Ganga was flowing below the red mark at Buxar, its level has been showing the rising trend from Maner to Digha in Patna district and Kahalgaon in Bhagalpur.

On Monday night, the water discharge through Indrapuri barrage across Sone was increased from 2.75 lakh cusecs at 2pm on Sunday to 3.41 lakh cusecs on Monday morning. However, after that the discharge level kept falling and was steady at 2.54 lakh cusecs. Similarly, the discharge through Falgu fell from 2.26 lakh cusecs to 1.75 lakh cusecs at 12 noon, and then rose to 1.89 lakh cusecs at 2pm.
However, the water discharge through Birpur barrage across river Kosi has been falling and so is the case with the Gandak which was flowing 83cm below the red mark at Hajipur where it meets the Ganga. It is expected that the floodwaters would show tangible receding trend from Tuesday. The WRD forecast said rainfall would be sparse across the state over the next four days from Tuesday.
