PATNA: Matrani Devi (30), an expectant mother, died due to lack of medical help at Patjar village submerged under floodwaters in Kaimur district late on Tuesday night.
Her cries for help went unheeded. Matrani's husband Dabloo Choudhary (35), tried to contact officials at Nuawon block headquarters for medical help but in vain. “She died wreathing in pain around midnight.
I was helpless as there is no hospital here. The entire village is under 8-10 feet water. I tried to call up many officers right from the district magistrate to the BDO requesting them either to arrange a country-boat or send a medical team to the village but there was no response from anybody,” ” Dabloo lamented.
Patjar village is about 8km from Nuawon block headquarters and 49km from the district headquarters Bhabua.
Panchayat mukhiya Prabhawati Devi said the woman could have been saved, had medical assistance been provided to her. “We all were helpless. No mode of transportation is available in several villages like Patjar under Nuanwon block during floods,” she added.
Nuawon block circle officer (CO) Raj Kishore Sharma, however, assured the family to conduct an inquiry into the matter. The CO prima facie denied reports of any negligence on the part of the officials. “The family should have contacted Asha workers for safe delivery of the woman. Why they (relatives) don't do so is a matter of probe,” he said.
The CO also said that it was not feasible for the district administration to send a medical team in marooned villages during the night.
