Cumilla pileup kills three, injure twenty
Five people were killed and 20 injured in road accidents in three districts during the last two days, according to reports from our correspondents.
In Cumilla, three buses and a truck collided in front of Sadar South upazila headquarters on Dhaka-Chattogram highway yesterday, leaving three bus passengers dead and 20 people injured.
Alamgir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Mainamati Highway Police Station, said a bus was trying to overtake another bus and the driver lost control over the vehicle, resulting in a head-on collision between them and an oncoming bus and truck.
Two passengers died on the spot, and another at Cumilla Medical College Hospital, said the OC.
The injured were taken to different hospitals in the town, said the police officer.
Two of the deceased were identified as Sazidur Rahman Santu, 38, from East Bagichagaon in Cumilla; and Abdur Rahim Manik, 40, from Chattogram. The identity of the other deceased was not known immediately, said Mamunur Rashid, officer in-charge of Cumilla Sadar South Police Station.
The death toll may rise, said the OC.
OC Alamgir Hossain said, “Rescue operation is going on to clear the road.”
In Faridpur, a man was killed as a motorbike he was riding and a battery-run auto-rickshaw collided head-on at Alipur in Sadar upazila on Thursday.
The deceased -- identified as Fayadul Alom Nazrul, 40 -- was from Alipur.
After he fell onto a road, locals rushed him to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, Kowtali Police Station Sub-inspector Bilal Hossain quoted witnesses as saying. Nazrul died there later, he added.
In Chattogram, a bicyclist was killed as a bus hit him at Kulgaon in the city’s Bayezid Bostami area yesterday.
The deceased -- identified as Mintu Das, 32 -- was from Baluchara in the area, said police.
