NEW DELHI: A youth was robbed of his mobile phone near Regal Cinema in Connaught Place (CP) earlier this week. But when he went to the CP police station, an officer allegedly convinced him to file an e-FIR, under which only a theft case can be registered.

The 23-year-old youth, who has come to Delhi from Patna to prepare for the company secretaryship exams, was allegedly assured that it would help the cops recover his belongings faster.
However, when he spoke to his friends about the incident later, the victim realised that he had been misled as no robbery case could be filed through an e-FIR. On a friend’s advice, he approached senior cops and an inquiry has now been ordered to verify his allegation and identify the officer.
While recording a fresh statement, the youth said that on October 1, he was walking towards the Hanuman temple from a departmental store near Regal Cinema. “I had entered a lane beside the theatre to look for a food stall around 9pm when a man pointed a knife at me and asked me to hand over my belongings,” he said. The assailant also pointed at the butt of a pistol stuck in his waist to scare him.
The youth handed over his mobile phone and some cash kept in the phone cover. After grabbing the items, the accused ran towards another man waiting on a white-colour scooter and they drove off towards the Hanuman temple. “The road was crowded, but no one came to my help,” he said.
The youth then found his way to the nearby police station, but was advised to file the e-FIR through the Delhi Police website. “I was in a hurry as I had to leave for Patna the following day. They even gave me a computer system at the police station to file the FIR,” he added.
“We have asked the station house officer and the assistant commissioner of police to inquire the allegation. Strict actions will be taken against any officer who is found to have misled the complainant,” said Eish Singhal, deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi).
