    India finally gets Rafale! Rajnath Singh receives first aircraft

    India has got its first Rafale combat jet in France. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has been handed over the first Rafale formally. He said: "I am happy that the delivery of Rafale aircraft is on schedule, I am confident that this will add further strength to our Air Force. I wish cooperation between our two major democracies further increases in all sectors. Today marks a new milestone in India-France strategic partnership.I look forward to taking a sortie in the Rafale aircraft. In India, today is the festival of Dusssehra also known as Vijayadashmi where we celebrate victory over evil. The other three are France, Egypt and Qatar. The initials of the air chief RB-01 have been imprinted on the tail fin of the first Rafale jet that India is set to receive in honour of the key role that he played in the negotiations on behalf of India.

    ED can withhold names of tax evaders in Panama Papers: CIC

    The names of alleged tax evaders appearing in the Panama Papers leak can be withheld by the Enforcement Directorate from disclosure, the Central Information Commission has held. The Commission made these observations while deciding the plea of Durga Prasad Choudhary who did not get a satisfactory response from the agency on his RTI application. Choudhary, in 2017, had sought information on three points -- the list of people named in the Panama Papers, action taken on the leak, and the details of the officers responsible for the delay in the investigation. The agency claimed exemption from disclosure under Section 24(1) to deny the request after the matter reached the Commission, the highest adjudicating body to decide RTI matters.

    Decide to link Aadhar card with property transactions: Punjab & Haryana HC

    The Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the Union Government and the two-state governments to take a decision on linking the Aadhar card with all property transactions by October 31. The order by a division bench led by Justice Rajiv Sharma and Harinder Singh Sidhu came on public interest litigation (PIL) that demands identification of properties made in another person's name. While disposing off the petition, the bench said that the petitioner has already made four representations in this regard to the Chief Ministers of Punjab and Haryana as well as the Administrator of Chandigarh and the Union of India on July 22.

    Top tax official who made sensational allegations against CBDT chairman gets promoted

    A top tax official, who reportedly made an unprecedented attack on CBDT Chairman alleging victimisation, has been promoted to the apex grade equivalent to Special Secretary. Alka Tyagi, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (Unit 2) in Mumbai, had reportedly written to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, making serious allegations against CBDT Chairman Pramod Chandra Mody, saying a previously disposed of vigilance case against her was now being used by him as a "weapon of blackmail" to stall her posting.

    An October 3 order of the CBDT said that "consequent upon approval of the Competent Authority" Tyagi has been "promoted to the grade of Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (level 17 in the pay matrix Rs 2.25 lakh)".

    Consequent upon the promotion, she was posted as Principal Director General of Income Tax (Training) at the National Academy of Direct Taxes in Nagpur, the order said.

    Millions in California may lose power

    California's Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E) has warned that it might shut off power this week in nearly 30 northern counties in the state northern region in response to strong and dry winds that poses a high risk of wildfires.     Man gets life term for raping minor daughter-in-law

    A court in Maharashtra has awarded life imprisonment to a 50-year-old man for raping his teenaged daughter-in-law in 2015. Additional Sessions Judge AU Kadam, in her order on Monday, said the accused, who worked as a driver in a government department and resided in Palghar, needed to be convicted with a strong sentence. She pronounced the accused guilty under Indian Penal Code sections for rape and criminal intimidation and under provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

    Some schools in the Valley have found a way around the protest-shutdown against the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status by holding early-morning classes for students to minimize academic losses before exams later this month.     Encounter in Chhattisgarh: Naxal killed, cop dies of heart attack

    A Naxal was gunned down in an encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district on Tuesday. A District Reserve Guard (DRG) jawan received minor injuries in the face-off while another personnel died of a suspected heart attack prior to the operation. The skirmish took place around 9 am near Pitepal village when separate teams of security forces were out on anti-Naxal operations.

    A wanted drug smuggler allegedly having links with an international drug mafia has been arrested by Kerala Excise sleuths in connection with a bid to
    smuggle narcotics worth Rs 200 crore to Malaysia through Kochi last year. A lookout notice was issued against Ali alias Abdul Rahman from Chennai for his alleged role in the bid to smuggle 26.082 kg of ecstasy drug to Malaysia through a private courier service here last year.     Illegal liquor unit busted, six arrested

    A factory manufacturing country-made liquor illegally was busted and six people were arrested. Additional Superintendent of Police Lal Bharat Kumar Pal said the factory was raided on Monday following a tip-off. Raw material and machines worth Rs 5 lakh were seized during the police action, he said.
    Pal said the arrested people are being interrogated to find where the illicit liquor was being supplied.

    BJP expels 4 members from party

    Uttarakhand BJP on Tuesday expelled four workers and office bearers for working against party-supported nominees in the ongoing panchayat polls in the state. The party's state unit general secretary Rajendra Bhandari issued the letter expelling four more party functionaries on the direction of state BJP president Ajay Bhatt. Dehradun district BJP Mahila Morcha president Maya Pant was among those expelled from the party on Tuesday. This takes the total number of party workers expelled by the BJP for anti-party activities so far to 94, state BJP media incharge Devendra Bhasin said.

    Nearly 100 climate activists arrested in NYC

    Nearly 100 climate activists were arrested in New York City during a protest after they blocked traffic and vandalized the iconic Wall Street Charging Bull statue.     Five more elephants found dead near Thai waterfall

    Five more wild elephants were found dead near the site where six tuskers plunged to their death trying to save each other from a waterfall at a national park in Thailand. These additional corpses were located near the Haew Narok ("Hell's Fall") waterfall at Khao Yai National Park, about 2 km away from the spot where the initial six had been found on October 6, Witthaya Hongwiangchan, the director of protected areas for the regional office 1 of Prachinburi province, told Efe news.

    Maruti cuts production for 8th straight month in September

    Reeling under a prolonged slowdown, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) reduced its production by 17.48 per cent in September, making it the eighth straight month when the country's largest carmaker lowered its output. The company produced a total of 1,32,199 units in September as against 1,60,219 units in the year-ago month, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) said in a regulatory filing. Passenger vehicles' production last month stood at 1,30,264 units as against 1,57,659 units in September 2018, a decline of 17.37 per cent, it added.

    Production of mini and compact segment cars, including Alto, New WagonR, Celerio, Ignis, Swift, Baleno and Dzire stood at 98,337 units as against 1,15,576 units in September last year, down 14.91 per cent.

    Similarly, production of utility vehicles such as Vitara Brezza, Ertiga and S-Cross declined 17.05 per cent to 18,435 units as compared with 22,226 units a year ago.

    Vice president to visit Comoros, Sierra Leone from October 10-14

    Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu will be on a visit to Comoros and Sierra Leone from October 10-14 during which he will hold talks with the top leadership of those countries to give a new momentum to bilateral ties as part of India's Africa outreach policy. The vice president's trip will be the first-ever high-level visit from India to the two countries, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

    Naidu will reach Moroni, Comoros, on Thursday and will have a detailed bilateral meeting with President Azali Assoumani the next day. He will also meet President of the Assembly of the Union of Comoros Abdou Ousseni, and address the Parliament Session there. The vice president will hold an interaction with the Indian community on October 10. During the visit a number of MoUs and agreements are likely to be signed, the MEA said.

    SRPF constable shoots self at Raj Bhawan, hospitalised

    A State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) constable posted at the Raj Bhawan allegedly shot himself with his service weapon. The incident took place on Monday evening following which he was rushed to a hospital where he was undergoing treatment. Constable Deepak Chavan, of the SRPF's 16 Kolhapur division, shot himself in the face with his gun in the servant quarters of the Governor's House.

    Chavan was initially taken to Elizabeth Hospital, but later shifted to Bombay Hospital where he was undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

    Greater Noida Authority asks plot owners to pay additional charge

    In a shocker for 25,000 plot owners in 50 sectors of booming Greater Noida town just on the outskirts of the national capital, GNIDA has slapped them with a demand notice to pay Rs 1,287 per square meter additional charge together with 11 per cent interest backdated to 2013. The demand follows Allahabad High Court asking it to give additional compensation to farmers whose land was acquired. Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) borrowed money from banks to pay some of the farmers Rs 4,500 crore, and is now wanting to recover it by backdating the demand from existing plot owners.

    The additional charge of Rs 1,287 per sq mt will have to be paid by all plot owners irrespective of when they bought the area. This charge will be levied from May 1, 2013 and will attract a 11 per cent simple interest, GNIDA said in the order, adding the amount due will be payable in four equal instalments.

    The indefinite strike by unions of Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) continued for the fourth day on Tuesday even as Chief Minister
    K Chandrasekhar Rao termed the agitating staff as being "self-dismissed". With nearly 50,000 employees boycotting duties and state-run buses staying off roads, commuters specially Dasara travellers faced problems, though the RTC said it has taken measures to ensure that passengers needs are fulfilled and they do not suffer and around 11,000 vehicles including buses were being operated.

    Encounter under way in Pulwama, militant killed

    Security forces killed a militant in an encounter in Awantipora town of Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, a police spokesperson said.

    He said the gunbattle broke out between militants and security forces on the outskirts of Awantipora this morning following a tip about the presence of ultras in the area.

    One militant was killed in the encounter, which was still on, the official said. The identity and group affiliation of the militant was being ascertained.

    Hong Kong suspends cross-border train services to China

    Hong Kong's Mass Transit Railway (MTR) Corporation has suspended all cross-border services to mainland China after footage emerged of a train enroute to Guangzhou being attacked by more than 20 black-clad assailants. According to the footage, at about 11 p.m. on October 4 the train taking passengers to Guangzhou was surrounded when it reached the station, the South China Morning Post reported.

    The video showed attackers using hammers and steel bars to smash the glass windows of the train and the surveillance cameras on the station platform.

    Inter-state gang of drug smugglers busted in UP

    With the arrest of two people, police have busted an inter-state gang of drug smugglers and seized 65 kg of narcotics in Shamli district. A police team led by SHO Yashpal Dhama intercepted a vehicle on Khatima-Panipat highway near Kairana on Monday evening. During checking, police seized 65 kg of 'doda post' (a kind of opium) and arrested two people.

    Pipeline burst in Assam: Four remain untraced, rescue ops on

    At least four persons, who were feared trapped inside a pump house after a pipeline carrying water to a hydro-power plant burst in Assam's Dima Hasao district, remained untraced on Tuesday, more than 24 hours after the accident. At least three employees of the state-run North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) and another worker have gone missing after a large portion of the Kopili Hydro Electric Plant, including the entire pump house area, was inundated due to rupture in the pipeline that carries 12,000 litres of water per second.

    14-yr-old girl raped, strangled to death in UP's Shamli

    A 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped and strangled to death in Shamli district. According to Circle Officer Rajesh Kumar Tiwari, the girl's body was found in an agricultural field in Kailshikapur village, which comes under the jurisdiction of Gahripukhta police station, on Monday evening. He said it appeared that she was strangulated to death with her 'dupatta' after rape.

    Imran arrives in China on third official visit

    Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan arrived in Beijing on Tuesday on his third official visit to China where he is slated to discuss issues of regional and bilateral importance with Chinese President Xi Jinping and his counterpart Li Keqiang. Upon his arrival in Beijing, Khan was received by Chinese Minister of Culture and Tourism Luo Shugang, Pakistan's Ambassador to China Naghmana Hashmi and other officials, The News International reported.

    Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will use the bungalow of former Union Minister Sheila Kaul as her abode in Lucknow. Kaul was the maternal aunt of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and wife of famous botanist Professor Kailash Nath Kaul. The bungalow, located on Gokhale Marg, has been locked up for years and was now being spruced up for Priyanka Gandhi's residence. It is flanked by a government colony and has a few high rise buildings in the neighborhood.

    Squadrons which participated in Balakot air strike awarded citations on IAF Day

    Two squadrons of the Indian Air Force, which played a role in the Balakot air strike, were decorated with citations at the Hindon base on the 87th IAF Day.

    IAF chief RKS Bhadauria decorated the 51 Squadron and the 9 Squadron for their role in the air strike on terrorist camps in Pakistan's Balakot in February.

    Every year, the Air Force Day is celebrated at Hindon base in presence of the IAF chief and senior officials of the three armed forces.
    The IAF was founded on October 8, 1932, and the force has participated in several crucial wars and landmark missions.

    Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman to fly MiG Bison Aircraft over Air Force Day parade today at Hindon Air Base in Ghaziabad. Three Mirage 2000 aircraft and 2 Su-30MKI fighter aircraft will fly in ‘Avenger formation’. Planes are being flown by pilots who took part in Balakot airstrike.

    Air Fighter Pilots who took part in Balakot airstrikes have been included in the parade as a mark of tribute to the teams which carried out the strike on February 26 and thwarted the Pakistani aerial attack on February 27.

    US, Japan sign trade agreements on agriculture and digital export

    The US and Japan have signed trade agreements on agriculture and digital exports, which American President Donald Trump termed a "tremendous victory" and said will help create jobs, expand investment, promote fairness and reduce trade deficit between the two countries. The two agreements signed at the White House were the new US-Japan Trade Agreement and the US-Japan Digital Trade Agreement.

    "These two deals represent a tremendous victory for both of our nations.     Trump defends decision to withdraw US troops from Syria

    Rajnath Singh to hold talks with French President before sortie in Rafale jet

    Five children drown in pit in Bihar village

    Five children, aged between five and ten, drowned in a large pit filled with floodwater here on Monday. District magistrate, Katihar, Punam said the incident took place in Bochahi village falling under Narayanpur panchayat of Manihari block. The children, including two girls, slipped into the pit while playing. All the deceased were adivasis (tribals) and members of the same extended family.

    MP woman hangs herself after killing three children

    A woman and her three children were found dead in a house in Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh on Monday. The police suspected that the woman had killed the children and then hanged herself. Kunti Devi was found hanging and her three children were laying on her feet. All children -- two boys and a girl -- were under six years of age, the police said, adding that three nooses were also found abandoned on the spot.

    3 juveniles detained for robbing man at knife point at Connaught Place

    Three juveniles were apprehended for allegedly robbing a person at knifepoint in Connaught Place area. The accused, residents of Jaitpur, had robbed a tattoo artiste at around 3 AM on Sunday near the Outer Circle of Connaught Place. After robbing the man, they tried to flee but one of them was nabbed by the patrolling staff.

    On his instance, his two other associates were also nabbed and the robbed purse, mobile and the kitchen knife used in the crime were recovered from their possession.

    Pakistan sets up special body for CPEC project

    Pakistan on Monday set up a special body to oversee investments and execute projects under the multi-billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project. President Arif Alvi promulgated an ordinance to set up the CPEC Authority on the eve of Prime Minister Imran Khan's trip to China to discuss investment opportunities.

    Army Chief General Qamar Javed has also reached China where he would meet the country's military leadership and join PM Khan in his political meetings, according to a brief statement by the Army.

    Delhi: Three held for robbing man of his car

    Three persons were arrested from Jaipur Highway for allegedly robbing a man of his car after finalising a deal for the vehicle through an online marketplace. The accused have been identified as Naveen Chaudhary (38), Babu Lal Gurjar (24) and Sarwan (28), residents of Sikar in Rajasthan.

    According to the complainant, his elder brother had posted an advertisement on an online marketplace for selling his car. The accused persons showed interest and called him for a trial of the vehicle.

    They visited the complainant's residence in Vikas Puri and went for a trial run with him. On the way, they forced him to get down in Haryana's Jhajjar area by threatening him with a toy gun.

    Haryana Assembly polls: 1,168 candidates to contest on 90 seats

    A total number of 1,168 candidates are left in the fray for the upcoming assembly elections in Haryana scheduled to be held on October 1 as the deadline for withdrawal of nomination ends. The last date for withdrawal of nomination by the candidates was October 7.

    "A total number of 1,168 candidates will contest on 90 assembly seats in the Haryana Assembly elections," Joint Chief Electoral Officer Inder Jeet said in a statement on Monday.

    The Election Commission also allotted election symbols to various political parties contesting the Assembly polls -2019 in the state.
