SECUNDERABAD: Even as many cities are struggling to turn the tables on atrocities on women, Secunderabad has emerged as a relatively safe city. A survey conducted by TOI in association with Varenia CIMS found that 81% women felt it was safe to move around freely in Secunderabad. Most of them said the presence of the army cantonment made this possible.
Nenita Praveen, a resident, said, "I have lived most of my life in Secunderabad.
As the army cantonment is based here, there is constant vigil on most roads and public spaces. Also, this part of the city has gradually grown in terms of population. So, the streets, unlike earlier, are more crowded now."
However, at the same time, few women even felt that safety varied from area to area. Amy Kumar, a resident, said, "Secunderabad is not completely safe. There are areas where one would not like to venture at all by themselves." Amy added that one cannot compare Bolarum with Sainikpuri because the two areas are different from each other in terms of community culture and population.
Elaborating further on community culture, she said in some areas the population of educated and open-minded people was greater compared to others. "It shapes the environment, which then brings with it an assurance of social security," said Amy.
Compared to Yapral, many residents, especially women, said that Sainikpuri was a much more welcoming place where they could comfortably roam around in any kind of an attire. They felt that Yapral was very secluded and some areas lacked streetlights, which made stepping out after dark risky.
Neha Duggal, another resident, said that apart from Yapral, the highly protected road between Trimugherry and Alwal often remained secluded and was devoid of any streetlight. She feared that if an incident occurred on that stretch, people would not get to know about it.
Even though safety and security were constant measures that women kept in mind while travelling, another resident pointed out that areas with slums, such as some narrow lanes in Marredpally, were dangerous to venture into. However, most of them also hoped that these issues of secluded streets and streetlights will be sorted out soon.
