Bihar: Prohibitory orders imposed in Jehanabad after stone pelting
Prohibitory orders under Section 144 have been imposed in the area.
PATNA: Curfew-like situation prevailed in Jehanabad following stone pelting during idol immersion procession in the district headquarters town in early hours of Thursday. The district administration has also clamped prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC as a precautionary measure.
The trouble started around 6am on Thursday when a group of people carrying idol of Goddess Durga for immersion was pelted with stones at Panchmahla near Arwal Mor.
The sudden attack on the processionists led to a stampede in which around a dozen people, including four police personnel, were injured.
The injured were rushed to the Sadar hospital in Jehanabad for treatment where condition of the two policemen was stated to be critical. In the meantime, devotees, who had assembled at different places like Raja Bazar, Fida Hussain Road and Gareria Khand to greet the idols, demanded stern action against the attackers.
The devotees indulged in arson, road blockade and stone pelting on the members of the rival group. The Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were rushed to the strife-torn localities to prevent the clashes. Flag marches were also carried out in the localities considered to be sensitive from security point of view.
Some locals alleged that a religious shrine in the town was also set on fire. A few shops were also gutted in the blaze. On being informed, senior administrative and police officials, including district magistrate Naveen Kumar and SP Manish rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
DM Naveen Kumar said the district borders have been sealed and strict vigil was being maintained on the visitors to the district headquarters town. Additional forces have been requisitioned from the neighbouring police stations to assist the district administration in restoring normalcy in the town.

Jehanabad sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Nivedita Kumari said, “Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC have been invoked in the town. As per the orders, display of firearms and assembly of five or more than five people at a particular place have been banned. This will continue till further orders.”
The orders were being circulated among the residents through public address system asking them to remain indoors till the situation turns normal. “Those found to be loitering around will be dealt sternly,” she said.
Meanwhile, the top police officials posted at the state police headquarters were monitoring the situation in Jehanabad. “We are closely monitoring the situation from here. All precautionary measures are being taken to maintain peace and harmony in the town,” additional director general (headquarters) Jitendra Kumar said.
