Section 144 clamped in Jehanabad after stone pelting at idol procession
Prohibitory orders under section 144 imposed in the area on Thursday.
PATNA: An incident of stone pelting at a procession carrying an idol of Goddess Durga for immersion led to unrest in Jehanabad early on Thursday, with the district authorities issuing prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC as a precautionary measure.
Trouble began around 6 am on Thursday when the procession was pelted with stones at Panchmahla near Arwal Mor. The attack led to pandemonium in which around a dozen people, including four police personnel, were injured.
The injured were rushed to the Jehanabad Sadar hospital where the condition of two police personnel is stated to be critical.
After the attack, the devotees gathered on the route of the procession, indulged in arson, road blockade and pelted stones at the members of the rival group. The district administration rushed RAF and CRPF teams to the trouble spots to prevent any clashes. Flag marches were also carried out in “sensitive” areas. DM Naveen Kumar and SP Manish rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
The DM said the district borders have been sealed and a strict vigil is being maintained at the district headquarters town. Additional forces have been requisitioned from neighbouring police stations to assist the district administration.
“Prohibition orders under Section 144 of CrPC have been invoked in the town. As per the orders, display of firearms and assembly of five or more than five people at a particular place has been banned. This will continue till further orders,” Jehanabad SDM Nivedita Kumari said.
The orders were being circulated through public address system asking people to remain indoors till the situation turned normal. “Those found loitering will be dealt with sternly,” she added.
Top officials at the state police headquarters are monitoring the situation in Jehanabad. “We are closely monitoring the situation from here. All precautionary measures are being taken to maintain peace and harmony in the town,” additional director general (headquarters) Jitendra Kumar said.
