GORAKHPUR: Two rival groups of prisoners clashed inside the Gorakhpur district jail over serving of poor quality food on Friday.

The issue only subsided after senior officials including the additional district magistrate intervened and assured the prisoners of fulfilling their demands.
Heavy police force and a company of PAC were rushed to the jail.
According to the press release issued by the jail administration, two rival gangs of jail inmates Koel Yadav and Govind Yadav instigated two groups of inmates and clashed with Jailer Prem Sagar Shukla and deputy jailer Prabhakant. The release also stated that jail inmates have written to the district administration for action against circle officer (city) Praveen Singh for thrashing them on Thursday evening.
Meanwhile, Gorakhpur district Magistrate Vijyendra Pandiyan said that jail inmates have some demands and they are giving them in writing.
ADM (City), Rakesh Kumar Srivastava, said, "There was a clash between two inmates over pulse and food. One was complaining over bad quality of cooking and other was saying that it was cooked by jail inmates. Later other inmates joined them which snowballed into a tussle. Things are sorted out and now cooking in the jail has resumed. Everything is normal and the police force is returning from jail.”
