PATNA: Rail traffic was paralysed for about seven hours on Siwan-Gorakhpur section following the derailment of a goods train at Siwan Junction on Thursday night.
The incident occurred around 11.35pm when the train was passing through platform number 4 of the station under the North Eastern Railway (NER). No one was injured but at least seven signal points were damaged at the Siwan Junction.
According to NER chief public relations officer (CPRO) Pankaj Singh, two wagons derailed and blocked the movement of passenger trains on the route.
“Bhatni-Siwan-Chhapra route was also affected due to the derailment. Most of the long-distance mail and express trains, including Barauni-Gwalior Express (11123) and Barauni-Gorakhpur Janseva Express (14618) were diverted to other routes,” he said.
According to sources, railway officials along with engineering staff rushed to the site with the accident relief train (ART).
Railways started the track clearance work late on Thursday night itself after getting clearance from the Siwan government railway police (GRP). The tracks on both the lines were cleared at 6.30am on Friday to run passenger trains.
Though the exact cause behind derailment was not known, sources in the NER said it could be a case of minor fault in the tracks or signalling system. A departmental inquiry would, however, be held to find out the real cause of derailment.
