PATNA: A public grievance redressal officer (PGRO) was arrested from Purnia for creating nuisance at a public place in an inebriated condition late on Saturday. The Breathalyzer test confirmed that he had consumed alcohol.
Police said on Sunday that Ranjan Kumar Chauhan was arrested when he was creating nuisance in a drunken state at Baisi. Chauhan, posted as subdivisional PGRO at Baisi, had gone to withdraw money from an ATM when the incident happened.
Chauhan lost his cool after finding the ATM cashless.
He not only rebuked the private security guard deployed at the ATM but also thrashed him in full public view. The guard was rescued by some local residents, who informed Purnia DM Rahul Kumar about the officer’s misconduct.
The DM said since the medical report confirmed that the Bihar Administrative Service (BPS) officer had consumed alcohol in violation of the Prohibition and Excise (amendment) Act, he was arrested and subsequently produced in the court, which remanded him to 14-day judicial custody.
The DM further said that the PGRO suspended with immediate effect and departmental proceedings were recommended against him. Purnia SP Vishal Sharma said Breathalyzer test had confirmed that the officer had consumed alcohol (133ml).
According to the FIR lodged by the security guard, Chauhan also damaged the ATM and threatened the guard on duty with dire consequences.
In a similar incident, DIG (Kosi range) Suresh Choudhary on Sunday ordered the suspension of two police officers, including an SHO, after gross irregularities were found in the official records of seized liquor consignment.

When contacted, Choudhary said Deena Nath Mandal (SHO) and Sunil Kumar, a sub-inspector posted at Sadar police station in Supaul, were suspended on the recommendation of the SDPO concerned. “A probe was ordered by the SP concerned after complaints were made to him against the two police officers,” he said. “Such lapses won’t be tolerated at any cost,” the DIG added.
Manufacture, consumption and sale of liquor is banned in the state since April 5, 2016.
