Diverse leisure options handy in quaint Secunderabad
SECUNDERABAD: Though it’s a twin, Secunderabad sure has an identity of its own. While areas like HI-Tec City and Banjara Hills might be more conventionally ‘happening’, residents feel that Secunderabad has enough to offer in terms of recreation.
In a survey conducted by TOI, in association with Varenia CIMS, an overwhelming 85% of residents felt that there were enough recreational facilities in Secunderabad.

“While Secunderabad might not have the fancy hangout spots, it has lovely lakes and getaway spots within its parameters. For instance, the Moula Ali hill is a perfect location for trekking and photography. Shamirpet deer park is meant for all nature lovers,” said Sanjana Sagar, a resident of Trimulgherry.
Many residents feel that the city is untouched by the commercialisation that seems to have enveloped the IT corridor and its surrounding areas. “Secunderabad has always been a residential area with quaint restaurants and lovely homes. The hustle and bustle that entered the state with the IT boom, and eventually took over Cyberabad, has not touched this part of the city,” said SNS Lahari, a software professional.
“The opinion that Secunderabad has no recreational areas is misguided,” said Damodaran Nair, a resident of Defence Colony. “The presence of areas such as
Shamirpet Lake, Kandlakoya park, Fox Sagar Lake provide enough opportunities for people of all age groups to unwind after a busy week of work,” said Nair.
In terms of shopping destinations, 83% residents have stated that they were happy with the options available. “There are enough textile and electronic centres in Secunderabad. With newer shops opening every day, we are spoilt for choice. We don’t need to travel long distances to go on a shopping spree,” Lahari said.
The old-world charm of Secunderabad is its greatest asset, said 22-year-old Hari Haran. “Secunderabad is home — safe, calm and clean — and untouched by the chaos of the crowded metropolitan culture. Some areas in the city are fast developing, but most of us hope that it stays how it is,” he said.
