Box Office: ‘Joker’ Became The Most Successful October Release Ever—In Just 10 Days

This article is more than 4 years old.

Sure, Joker is performing better than anybody ever expected.

But this...this is ridiculous.

We’re just 13 days into the month (and ten days into the film’s release) and Joker has already made more money than any movie has ever made during October. Last week we reported that Joker would easily claim the October crown by the end of the month—but to do it with 18 days left to go is pretty crazy.

Box Office Mojo was predicting a 53% drop in weekend-over-weekend revenue for Joker domestically, which meant this past weekend its total would’ve dropped from $96.2 million to about $46 million. But Joker’s total only ended up falling 43%, which meant the film raked in another $55 million and easily claimed the No. 1 spot at the box office once again. That brought the film’s national revenue to $192.7 million.

But the kicker was the film’s overseas performance this past weekend. While Joker’s opening weekend in foreign markets was already stellar with $152 million, this past weekend saw a 33% increase, bringing the film’s overseas total to a whopping $351 million.

In total? That’s $543.9 million in just ten days.

As reported last week, Joker had four main competitors in claiming the October crown. The first was The Martian, which accrued $180 million domestically in 2015 and around $426 million worldwide. That total fell short, however, of the Joker’s true main opponent: Venom. Last year, that film made $190 million domestically in the month of October and $520 million globally.

Obviously, Joker has already topped both of those films. The other two October contenders came after we accounted for ticket price inflation: Shark Tale and Gravity.

When Shark Tale was released on October 2004, it brought in $146.8 million domestically. But after adjusting for inflation, that total skyrocketed to $213.1 million. And the film’s global total during that month stood at about $100 million. Obviously even after inflation, that total doesn’t near Joker.

Gravity, however, came much closer. During October 2013, Gravity accrued $206.1 million domestically. After adjustments, that total jumps to $222.4 million. And the film’s overseas sales sat around $200 million during that month—again, an impressive amount, but nowhere near Joker’s 10-day total.

So now all Joker can do is add to its lead. All estimates point towards the film accruing over $750 million by the end of its run—not bad for a film with a $55 million budget.
