Jon Snow may know nothing, but perhaps Black Knight knows more.

Kit Harington is set to move on fully from Game of Thrones as he takes on a major franchise role in upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie The Eternals.

The British actor has been cast as human character Dane Whitman in the film, which focuses on the titular race of super-powered beings created by God-like figures known as Celestials who have lived on Earth for thousands of years and seek to protect humanity from an evil race known as The Deviants.

Speaking at business summit NEXT conference , Harington revealed some more details about Whitman, who in Marvel Comics is also the Avenger known as Black Knight.

Harington said: "Now I'm going to a Marvel movie. I'm going off to play a superhero, which is cool. Can't really tell what I can say about it. [...] So next year looks exciting. It's trying to choose things... [laughs] I'd say it's trying to choose things as far from Jon Snow as possible, but I'm back to a superhero. He's got a sword, so, you know."

In the comics, Black Knight wields a mystical sword that is cursed, taking his name from a villainous ancestor in the hopes of restoring honour to his family, whilst also having a romance with the Eternal known as Sersi, who will be played by Gemma Chan in the film.

The Emmy-nominated star also revealed at ACE Comic Con in Chicago that he is pleased to be working beside his previous on-screen brother Richard Madden , who has the pivotal role of Eternals hero Ikaris in the film.

"It was emotional saying goodbye to him in Thrones all those years ago, because even three years in, when he left the show, something really did shift and the show became something else," Harington said. "There was a marker where losing Richard really changed the show. And some of my fondest memories of Game of Thrones are with Richard Madden. He’s a wonderful man and he’s still one of my very, very good friends."

On moving on from Jon Snow to a new character, Harington acknowledged further that there are some similarities between the two characters.

"Really what I’m excited about is getting involved in a new world, in a new universe," he added. "Coming here, I can see just how passionate people are about this world…I’m just thrilled, it’s a whole new chapter and a whole new character to start thinking about, and one that, without saying too much, on the surface can look a little bit like Jon Snow…but actually, I think there’s a lot to be done that’s different."

In addition to Harington and Madden, The Eternals will also star the likes of Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjiani, and Brian Tyree Henry.

The Eternals is released in cinemas on November 6, 2020.
