JIAGUNJ (MURSHIDABAD): After achieving a breakthrough in the probe into the October 8 triple murder in Jiagunj, Murshidabad Police on Tuesday night arrested slain teacher-cum-chain marketer Bandhu Prakash Pal’s business partner Souvik Banik.
Banik is not a suspect in the murder of Bandhu Prakash, his wife Beauty and son, but he has been charged with cheating the murdered teacher of Rs 6 lakh.
On Wednesday, he was produced in a Jangipur court and remanded in police custody for 12 days. His arrest follows adverse reaction from the victim’s family and in-laws to police naming mason Utpal Behera as the prime suspect in the murders.
Bandhu Prakash’s cousin Bandhu Krishna Ghosh, who had lodged the complaint into the murders, had named Banik as a murder suspect. Police had detained Banik for the murder but investigators found he was not involved.
Sleuths, instead, zeroed in on Behera. Bandhu Prakash’s in-laws, however, voiced doubts about the outcome of the police probe. Beauty’s brother Sakshi Gopal said: “We want police to probe Banik’s role in the murder.” Bandhu Praka-sh’s mother Maya Rani, however, said: “We are happy with the police investigation.”
