NASHIK: A man and a woman in their 70s died of suspected
diarrhoea while 87 others were taken ill in Savarpada village of Kalwan taluka, 90km from here, on Thursday. Senior officials of the district health department said water contamination from a ruptured pipeline is believed to have caused the infection.
The district health machinery rushed to the village and administer treatment to those infected.
By Thursday evening, seven persons were still admitted at the Kalwan rural hospital while the rest were discharged after treatment.
The deceased were identified as Pandharinath Barde (75) and Chandra Thakre (70).

A senior medical officer at the Kalwan rural hospital said Barde had been admitted a week ago for jaundice but was also suffering from diarrhoea. Thakre was brought dead to the hospital on Thursday morning. Their bodies have been sent for a post-mortem.
Vijay Dekate, district health officer, said water samples have been collected from the village. He warned of strict action if laxity was found in the purification of water before it was supplied for drinking.
In July last year, five people had died in different parts of the district following an outbreak of diarrhoea in two villages. Cases of diarrhoea occasionally occur in villages during the monsoon when well water gets contaminated with sewage.
