HOWRAH: A young couple — Amit Burman (23) and his wife Reshmi Burman (21) — died of burns under mysterious circumstances in their house at Daspara in Howrah’s Domjur on Thursday night. Amit’s parents, Onkar Burman and Koushalya Burman, are absconding.
Police are investigating whether the deaths were suicidal or homicidal. Neighbours alleged that the couple had been burnt to death by Amit’s parents.
They also alleged that since the duo got married eight months ago, Amit was under pressure from his parents to earn money. Reshmi was also being pressurised by her in-laws for dowry, said neighbours.
According to police, Amit said in his dying statement at Howrah hospital that someone had set ablaze their room. Police detained Amit’s elder brothers Rakesh and Ramesh.
