Water from British-era tank in Secunderabad fills barracks

A British era water tank atop Gun Rock Hill in Secunderabad continues to serve thousands of people, mostly those living in the military establishments and barracks, even today. The military water tank, popularly known as Gun Rock Hill Tank, is the best example of masonry work when the British had control over Secunderabad Cantonment. Heritage experts have described it as an engineering masterpiece. Though it was built over a century ago, it has not suffered any major structural defect. Most military establishments get their supplies on alternate days from this water tank.

HYDERABAD: A British era water tank atop Gun Rock Hill in Secunderabad continues to serve thousands of people, mostly those living in the military establishments and barracks, even today.
Though the Army Ordinance Corps (AOC) Centre and other military establishments have seen a spurt in population over the decades, no new water sources were created to meet the increased demand.
Heritage experts say that the water tank was built in the later part of the 19th century to ensure uninterrupted supply to military barracks.
INTACH city convener P Anuradha Reddy said the tank was built in such a way that it appears like a fort from far away. But as one nears it, one finds the water tank.
“It is a work of architectural beauty. INTACH has presented an award to the tank. The military has been protecting the tank and the hill from encroachments,” she told TOI.
