SECUNDERABAD: After a six-hour operation, the bodies of six employees of a private hospital in Secunderabad, who fell into a canal of Nagarjunasagar at Chakirala village in Suryapet district on Friday night, were fished out on Saturday.
Almost 15 hours after the six youngsters, returning home in a Mahindra Scorpio accidentally fell in the canal, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local swimmers pulled out the ill-fated car.
All six occupants of the car, as feared earlier, were found dead.
Suryapet district police said Ankura Hospital, AS Rao Nagar branch employees J Nageshwara Rao, 36, V Pavan Kumar,23, B Santosh Kumar,24, Abdul Azeez,34, Jimson George,29, T Rajesh, 29, drowned.
On Friday, 11 employees of the private hospital went to Suryapet to attend their colleague’s wedding. They went in two cars — a Tata Indica and a Mahindra Scorpio.
Around 8pm, they started their journey back to Hyderabad. After they reached Chakirala village, the persons travelling in the Indica found that their colleagues travelling ahead of them in the Scorpio were not visible. When they tried to reach them over the phone, there was no response. Suspecting that something had gone wrong, they started to search for them. During their search they discovered that the Scorpio had fallen into the canal linked to Nagarjunasagar. They alerted the police immediately.

“It was raining heavily when they were travelling on the narrow bridge of the NSP left bank canal. It appears that they were travelling at high speed and fell into the canal. The car was located 150 metre away from the mishap site,’’ Suryapet district collector Amoy Kumar said.
Though police and district officials reached the location within no time, they could not take up rescue operations as it was raining and the current was strong in the canal. Their rescue efforts too went in vain. The district officials contacted NDRF on Friday night and sought their help.
On Saturday morning, the NDRF personnel with the help of locals tied tyres of the Scorpio with ropes and after a few failed attempts pulled out the car to the shore using a crane. “By then, the six had died,” police said.
Police said autopsies were performed on the bodies and then handed over to the respective family members.
