'Moments In Spacetime' gets its first look

It’s been the talk of the town since it was announced in the spring it would be shot here, and a few people got a sneak peek on Friday night during a special screening at the Cold Lake High School.

‘Moments In Spacetime’ is the product of Kinosoo Films – local husband and wife team Chris Cowden and Patti Srisuwan.  Her character Macey struggles to find her place in the world and within herself, and strengthens her relationship with her adopted Grandfather as he battles dementia.

Playing the loveable but sometimes crochety Grand Dad who likes an evening wine to chase down the beer, is John Rhys-Davies (the ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Indiana Jones’ franchises, as well as the animated classic TV series ‘Gargoyles’, among others).

Of course he’s ‘the name’ in the credits, and it also co-stars Sam Gittins (‘Eastenders,’ ‘Tom Dick & Tracy’, and ‘Await Further Instructions’), but it’s the many faces and places you see that are the real stars of the movie.

The red carpet affair began with the CLES Choir performing the movie’s theme song, “I’ll Follow,” followed by a sit-down talk with Emcee Greg Friend in front of the audience.

“This project isn’t just our project, it’s become everyone’s project,” Srisuwan said.

The film’s interweaving storylines highlight family, loss, relationships, and social awareness, and the threat of them as dividing us, but in the end bringing us together.

Cowden, who recently lost his own grandfather to dementia, said writing the movie was obviously a moving experience for him, personally, and acted as therapy.

Srisuwan added it was also important to put a spotlight on some of the racial stereotypes many immigrants face.

“With this film, we wanted to get our audience to experience the life of immigrants for two hours.  We’re not asking for sympathy, we’re asking for empathy,” she said.

A native of Thailand, she added it was naturally hard to break into movies, but noted the time was right, for her, and now others.

“It’s definitely been hard, but I think Hollywood is ready, and the audiences are ready, to have an immigrant leading in the film.”

Cowden noted they’d like to shoot here in their hometown again, and has been encouraging other film makers to look at the region for productions.

“Alberta’s a really great place for the film industry right now.  We have one of the highest tax credits for filming,” he said.  “Most of them are in the Calgary area, southern Alberta – but I don’t see any reason why Cold Lake couldn’t be on that list.  We’re hoping this film starts a trend that continues.”

‘Moments In Spacetime’ opens for a limited engagement at the Grand Square Cinema this Friday, October 21.  It will then be shopped around worldwide at various independent film festivals in the New Year.
