The Paris Theater, the famed art house venue that was thought to have closed for good this summer, will re-open next month for Netflix’s showing of Noah Baumbach’s eagerly anticipated film Marriage Story.

Deadline reported the announcement last Friday.

In August, the Paris Theater, on West 58th Street, went dark after 71 years, following the end of its lease by City Cinemas lease. The theater had been New York City’s last remaining single-screen movie house and was beloved by foreign and classic film buffs.

Although several outlets have described the Netflix showing as a limited run engagement, the news has spurred questions as to whether the streaming giant's arrangement may be a precursor to a longer-term lease that would keep the Paris Theater alive. Indiewire reported sources as saying lease negotiations are already underway.

Both Netflix and the theater’s owner, Solow Realty, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The streaming service has been seeking to find theaters to launch its movies as it continues to draw top directorial and acting talent to its studio because theatrical runs are a prerequisite to compete for awards. Major theater chains have declined to play Netflix productions because they say a brief showings in a theater prior to the film being available on streaming platforms is not long enough to make it worth their while.

In April, Deadline reported that Netflix had reached a deal with the non-profit American Cinematheque to buy the venerable Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. In its latest story, Deadline state that the deal is yet to be finalized, but notes that it would represent the “the first brick and mortar movie theater acquisition investment for Netflix and an investment, placed by sources at tens of millions of dollars.”

Marriage Story is set to premiere at the Paris Theater and five other movie houses on November 6 before a wider release on November 15. The film will have its streaming debut on December 6.

Starring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver as a couple undergoing a bi-coastal divorce, the movie opened to strong reviews following showings at film festivals.
