A man has been filmed attacking a snake with a walking stick in the ocean off a beach in Queensland.
The footage was taken at The Strand in Townsville on Sunday showing a man in a grey shirt and straw hat wading through the shore break with a walking stick.
He reaches out with his walking stick and flicks it at the water, where a large olive sea snake is seen swimming through the surf.
The beach had been cleared after the snake was spotted, with lifesavers alerting beach users to stay out of the water.

The man ignored lifesavers warnings and turned his walking stick to have the handle outstretched before attempting to scoop the snake out of the water.
A bystander watching on can be heard in the video saying 'what are you doing mate?'

9News reported that the snake eventually washed back into shore, where the man proceeded to kill it with the walking stick.
Snakes are protected in Queensland under the Nature Conservation Act.
'Interacting with a snake with the purpose of killing it is extremely dangerous and illegal in this case,' sea snake expert Blanche D'Anastasi said.
