A number of Gillingham fans have taken to Twitter to bemoan the FA Cup first-round draw, which has put them up against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light next month.

The Black Cats will lock horns with their League One rivals – who were beaten last season by the Stadium of Light side in both fixtures – on the weekend of 9 November.

Sunderland and Gillingham will then face off in Kent a month later in the league before the reverse fixture on Wearside takes place in March.

The Mackems – who have only ever lost once against the Gills in competitive action (11v11) – were knocked out of the competition at the second-round stage last season, losing to Walsall in a replay after beating Port Vale in the first round.

The Gills, meanwhile, played five FA Cup games last season, needing a replay to see off Hartlepool in the first round, seeing off Slough and Cardiff in the next two, before being knocked out by Swansea in the fourth.

Here is some of the reaction to the draw on social media:

As reported by the Sunderland Echo, winning sides in the first round will receive £36,000 – but unlike the qualifying rounds, losing sides do not get any prize money between the first round and quarter-final.
