'I found out on social media': Lynn unhappy with Hohns after T20 omission

By Sam Phillips

Australian Twenty20 star Chris Lynn has questioned Cricket Australia chief selector Trevor Hohns after he was left out of the squad for the games against Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Lynn has been one of the first batsmen picked in the national T20 side in recent years.

His explosive power is arguably the best in the Australian batting ranks but he was left out of the squad that will play three T20s against Sri Lanka and three more against Pakistan in the next fortnight.

Hohns said Lynn had not played enough cricket in Australia to warrant selection but the 29-year-old was miffed to hear that reasoning when speaking at a Kayo launch event in Sydney on Tuesday.

Lynn said he had not heard from Hohns prior to missing out on selection. He found out he would not play against Sri Lanka or Pakistan via social media.

"The thing I was disappointed about was the lack of communication. Not even a phone call. I found out on social media," Lynn told the Herald.

"That’s the world we live in these days. But it is what it is. I kind of felt it was coming.

"Put the head down, score some runs and you pick yourself. I’m not losing sleep over it, put it that way. It makes me hungrier and more competitive."

Lynn has not spoken to Hohns in the aftermath of the squad announcement. He believes the lack of communication has become a concerning trend within the Australian cricket hierarchy.

"I haven’t spoken to him. I find it’s something that’s ongoing and getting worse in Australian cricket - that lack of communication," he said.

"I’m not just talking about my case. There are plenty of other scenarios where players feel a bit lost on where they stand. It's disappointing."

Lynn may not feature in the back-to-back T20 series but he will take guard as part of the Prime Minister's XI, which will face Sri Lanka at Manuka Oval on Thursday night.

After that, the power-packed Queenslander will turn his attention to the Big Bash.

His primary goal in Brisbane Heat colours this summer? "Dominate the Big Bash," Lynn said. "Probably the last four or five years I’ve been pretty dominant in the Big Bash but then the last one or two have been steady. I’ve been OK with them. A pass mark.

"I’m my own harshest critic, though, and I want to keep dominating. I also want to win a title. If we win the title I’m obviously doing something right and I will have led the boys around well enough."

Dominating the Big Bash is a lofty goal. So is winning a title. But it's certainly not out of reach for Lynn, who brings crowds through the gates with his highlight-reel hitting.

Lynn also felt his chronic shoulder injury was on the mend, largely due to a lack of cricket.

"Through these tournaments being cancelled, I’ve had eight to 10 weeks to get strong and fit. I haven’t had that opportunity for six or seven years," he said.

"That’s been a blessing and now I can set up the next 12 to 18 months from these seven or eight weeks at home. It’s the strongest and fittest I’ve been for a couple of years."
