HIGH SCHOOL

Here are the top Indy-area sectional football games this week

The high school football regular season is over. All of Class 6A has a bye this week and most of Class 5A is off before starting sectional play next week. But there are games, plenty of them. Here are the top-10 sectional games in the area this week:

1. Bishop Chatard (8-1) at Brebeuf Jesuit (7-2), Class 3A Sectional 28: Class 3A top-ranked Chatard won the season-opener against Brebeuf, 49-14, and has not really been challenged all season, other than its 10-point loss to Cathedral. Can Jay Higgins and the Brebeuf defense make this a low-scoring game? Other than the Chatard game, Brebeuf’s highest points allowed this season was in a 21-7 loss to Cathedral.

2. Plainfield (5-4) at Decatur Central (7-2), Class 5A Sectional 13: Plainfield gave the Hawks all they could handle in a 42-38 Decatur Central victory on Sept. 27. This is one of two 5A games on Friday night. The winner of this game plays 2-7 Terre Haute North next week.

3. Danville (4-5) at Tri-West (7-2), Class 3A Sectional 29: A couple of missed extra points proved costly for Danville in a 27-26 loss to Tri-West on Sept. 20. Chandler Schubert rushed for a season-high 269 yards in that game for Danville. For Tri-West, that one-point win was the start of its current five-game winning streak.

4. Lapel (6-3) at Eastern (Greentown) (9-0), Class 2A Sectional 37: There are no common opponents between these teams. Lapel has played a more difficult schedule, losing to Shenandoah, Cardinal Ritter and Heritage Christian by a combined 11 points. This is Eastern Greentown’s first undefeated regular season since 1974. The Comets have never won a sectional.

5. Guerin Catholic (5-4) at Yorktown (6-3), Class 3A Sectional 28: The prize for the winner is a likely date with defending state champion West Lafayette. Guerin Catholic last won a sectional in 2014. Yorktown’s only losses are to 4A and 5A teams.

6. Eastern Hancock (7-2) at Winchester (6-3), Class 2A Sectional 38: Eastern Hancock needs a win here to set up a possible rematch with Heritage Christian next week, which is one of the Royals’ two losses. Winchester has rebounded after back-to-back losing seasons.

7. Heritage Christian (8-1) at Northeastern (7-2), Class 2A Sectional 38: Heritage Christian has designs on winning its first sectional title since the state championship season of 2008. Northeastern has never won a sectional title.

8. Crispus Attucks (6-2) at Beech Grove (3-6), Class 4A Sectional 22: This is the first meeting for these programs. Beech Grove, which is 5-4 on the field with two forfeit losses, lost quarterback Gavin Mitchell last week due to a broken collarbone. Attucks has won three consecutive games.

9. Speedway (3-6) at North Putnam (7-2), Class 2A Sectional 37: This should be a competitive matchup. These teams used to play every year, but have not met since a sectional game in 2012.

10. Tindley (8-0) vs. Covenant Christian (5-4), at Zionsville West, Class A Sectional 46: Tindley won the regular-season game between these teams, 24-19. Covenant Christian has won three consecutive games without allowing a point.
