Cannock couple celebrate 65 happy years
It started with a bang and now Bill and Doreen Schofield have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
The couple from Cannock met at work at Fafnir Bearings when Doreen rushed through a doorway, hitting Bill in the process.
"He jokes that he has never recovered from that knock on the head!" their daughter Carol Watson said.
The pair married on October 16 1954 at St Peter's Church in Hednesford and have always since lived near the area.
Their first home was in Chadsmoor and in 1964 they moved to Wimblebury, Doreen’s home village, before settling back in Hednesford in 1987.
Bill left the factory later in 1954 and worked in the coal mines for the rest of his career.
Bill, 89, and Doreen, 84, have two daughters, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Carol added: "A short courtship led to a happy marriage and they are grateful for all the happy times they have enjoyed and are never happier than when the family are all together.
"They celebrated this milestone occasion with a family meal for 27 close relations.
"They have enjoyed travelling over the years and celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a Caribbean cruise, although both have very fond memories of earlier holidays in Torquay.
"In recent years they have joined family for holidays abroad with four generations having fun in Turkey, Ibiza and Kos.
"Closer to home they enjoy eating out and the company of friends from St. Peter’s Church, where Bill has only recently retired as verger." Doreen said they have always got on well.
When asked what the secret to a happy marriage is, Doreen said: "It's give and take. We've never taken each other for granted, and never done anything unless we've asked each other first if they approve."
