MANGALURU: Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka has recorded huge property losses in the recent spell of rains since October 18.
While 33 houses have been partially damaged, nine have been severely damaged as per reports received from respective tehsildars, deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh said. On the brighter side, there has been no loss of life, including those of animals in the latest spell of rains, the DC noted.

The revenue authorities have initiated the process of providing compensation to the affected families through the Rajiv Gandhi Rural Housing Corporation Ltd as per the revised norms announced by chief minister BS Yediyurappa, she said. With the government revising the category of houses damaged from A, B and C to A and B respectively, the DC said those in A category (severely damaged) will receive Rs 5 lakh and rest (partially) Rs 1 lakh.
The corporation is transferring compensation amount to bank accounts of people who have lost their dwellings through RTGS following norms of GPS tagging and uploading picture of the same to its portal. The government had released Rs 1 lakh to people in A category and Rs 25,000 each to those in B and C category. Now those in B and C categories, who are deemed to be in B category and receive the remaining amount shortly, Sindhu said.
People placed in A category of property loss will receive Rs 5,000 as house rent for next 10 months after first installment of their overall compensation has been credited to their account.
The number of victims in A category on account of August deluge is 265, those in B category 180 and C category 263.
Out of these 229, 179 and 142 victims have been provided compensation of Rs 2.27 crore, Rs 44 lakh and Rs 35.39 lakh respectively, she noted.
