KOLHAPUR: In a major setback for the ruling BJP, party candidate from Satara Lok Sabha seat Udayanraje Bhosale trailed by 14,719 votes against his NCP rival Shriniwas Patil after the initial rounds of vote counting.
Patil, a close confidante of NCP chief Sharad Pawar, established a margin of around 1,000 votes at the end of the first round of vote counting.
The initial lead by the NCP candidate is significant as Udayanraje, the 13th descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji, is said to have a massive following in Satara district.

Byelection results live coverage
The byelection was necessitated after Bhosale quit his Lok Sabha membership and joined the ruling BJP. Bhosale had won the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha election from Satara on NCP's ticket. NCP has argued during the campaign that Bhosale had forced the byelection on the voters for personal reasons.
Satara byelection has become a prestige issue for the NCP as the district has been supporting the party since its inception in 1999.
Sharad Pawar had addressed an election rally in heavy rains for Patil, which is said to be the major factor to generate sympathy for the NCP and its cadre.
Significantly, Udayanraje’s cousin Shivendraraje, who had also joined the BJP a few days before the election, is leading in Satara assembly constituency by 2,100 votes.
Former chief minister Pritiviraj Chavan is leading by 1,700 votes from Karad-South constituency.
