MYSURU: Anand Mahindra, chairman, Mahindra Group, on Wednesday announced that he’d gift a Mahindra SUV to Dakshina Murthy Krishna Kumar, a resident of Mysuru who is taking his mother Chudarathana on a scooter to various temples across India, Nepal, and Bhutan as per her wish.
Kumar, 40, is currently in Arunachal Pradesh with his 71-year-old mother. He started the 21-month ‘Matru Seva Sankalpa Yatra’ in January 16, 2018 from his Mysuru home.
They have visited most temples across Karnataka and India, as well as several in Nepal and Bhutan. He and his mother are travelling on a 19-year-old Bajaj Chetak which belonged to his father. He remained a bachelor so that he could serve his mother.

Anand Mahindra tweeted that it’s a beautiful story, about the love for a mother but also about the love for a country. “I’d like to personally gift him a Mahindra KUV 100 NXT so he can drive his mother in a car on their next journey,” he tweeted. Incidentally, the mother-son duo did their first temple trip in a car in April 2017. She carried a photograph of her husband on the trip and said it would have been nice if he had also come along. That’s when Kumar decided to take his father’s scooter on the pilgrimage in his memory.
Kumar said: “My mother had been stuck in the kitchen for the best part of her life. She had never visited any places outside Mysuru. So, I decided to take her on this pilgrimage.” Kumar prefers to travel only in the morning and in the evening. They stay in temples, dharamshalas and homes of well-wishers on their journey.
Kumar, who has worked for several companies in Bengaluru, said he’s using his savings for this pilgrimage. “My father died four years ago. After working for over 13 years in various companies in Bengaluru, I decided to make my mother’ s dream come true,” he said.
