BJP and Shiv Sena are yet to begin the talks on government formation in Maharashtra. It’s been over a week since the assembly election results were announced. However, the power tussle between the BJP and Shiv Sena over the chief minister post is far from over. While the Sena is insisting on sharing the top post for two-and-half-years, the BJP is ready to offer deputy chief minister post and wants to keep the CM post for a full five-year term.
A Shiv Sena delegation led by Aditya Thackeray today met Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari. Apart from Aditya, Eknath Shinde, Diwakar Raote and Subhash Desai were also part of the delegation. After meeting the governor, Thackeray said that Sena leaders requested the Governor to provide assistance to farmers and fishermen who suffered damages due to recent rains. “He has assured us that he himself will talk to the Centre,” he added.
In the recent assembly polls, BJP won 105 seats whereas Shiv Sena 56 in the 288-member House. Sena has also demanded a ‘written’ assurance from the BJP over the 50:50 formula for CM post. Today, senior Sena leader and MP Sanjay Raut said that his party would not go back on its demand. He said that it was the BJP that is going back on its promise made to Sena ahead of Lok Sabha polls.

Maharashtra Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar today said that Shiv Sena should come forward for an alternative arrangement. He also said that though the mandate for the Congress was to sit in opposition, the party needed to join hands with others to stop the BJP from coming to power. “The mandate for the Congress is to perform the role of opposition. But to stop the BJP, we need to come together. Shiv Sena has to come forward. The Sena should come forward for an alternative arrangement as the popular mandate was against the BJP,” the Congress leader said.
NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday said that gorming the next government in Maharashtra is not an option for his party and it will sit in the opposition as mandated by the people.
As many as 176 newly-elected MLAs in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly are facing criminal charges, as per data released by an advocacy group on Saturday. On analysing self-sworn affidavits of 285 of the total 288 MLAs, the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) found that 62 per cent (176 MLAs) have criminal cases pending against them while 40 per cent (113 MLAs) have serious criminal cases.

Bharatiya Janata Party has called meeting of all its MLAs in Maharashtra on October 30. “BJP has called legislative party meeting on 30th October at Vidhan Bhavan to elect leader in the house. All 105 MLAs to attend the meeting,” BJP Maharashtra president Chandrakant Patil said.

BJP president Amit Shah reportedly called his Shiv Sena counterpart Uddhav Thackeray to discuss formalities regarding government formation in Maharashtra. Taking a dig at the BJP a day after Maharashtra assembly election results were declared, Shiv Sena said Sharad Pawar has proved more powerful that the BJP. “The NCP bounced back crossing the 50-seat mark, while a leaderless Congress won 44 seats. The results were a warning to rulers not to show arrogance of power… its a rap on their knuckles,” an editorial in Sena mouthpiece Saamana said.
Republican Party of India chief Ramdas Athawale has demanded two posts in the new Maharashtra government. Speaking to reporters in Ranchi, Athawale said his party should get one cabinet and one state minister berth. “Amit Shah Ji will visit Mumbai to hold discussions with meet Uddhav Thackeray Ji on who all will be made minsters in the state cabinet,” news agency ANI quoted the Union minister, as saying.
A day after election results, posters have come in Worli demanding newly elected MLA from the constituency Aaditya Thackeray be made the chief minister. Aaditya Thackeray, 29, won Worli seat by more than 65,000 votes. He is the first from Thackeray clan to contest and win an election.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has won from Nagpur South West Assembly constituency in the Nagpur district. He defeated Congress candidate Ashish Deshmukh by a margin of 34,363 votes. Deshmukh is a former BJP MLA. A total of 18 other contenders including seven independents were in the fray from this seat. Fadnavis is representing the Vidhan Sabha seat since 2009.
Speaking to media after the winning from Worli, Aaditya Thackeray said, “I am very happy that the people have blessed me with so much margin and so many votes.”
CM Devendra Fadnavis said that two results are shocking. “Bypoll for Satara Lok Sabha constituency and Parli Assembly constituency. Our 6 ministers have lost, we will find out reasons tomorrow onward. Today’s the day to celebrate our victory and let us do that,” he said.
Shiv Sena leader Priyanka Chaturvedi on Thursday congratulated yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray after he won from Worli. “Congratulations to Worli’s new @ShivSena MLA and state’s youngest leader in the assembly @AUThackeray ji!!” she tweeted.
