21st MAMI Indian festival at Mumbai concludes with Award ceremony

The MAMI 21st Mumbai Film Festival had overall about 190 films in its official line-up;over 50 debuts,13 world premieres spanning 53 countries and 49 languages.

One of the most sought-after Indian film festivals, the 21st Mumbai Film Festival organised by Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI) has come to an end. The week-long festival was held in Mumbai at different locations all over the city where movies from different genres were showcased. A lot of events were scheduled for cinema lovers including different enlightening sessions by industry veterans on various topics.

Cinema lovers' paradise

Apart from the glamour quotient of the celebrities who attended this festival, this famous film festival was also a cinema enthusiast's retreat. With actor Deepika Padukone as the Chairperson and film critic Anupama Chopra as the Festival Director, the Mumbai film festival has a panel of Indian actors, directors and producers as its board of trustees. Indian actor Deepti Naval and Brazilian filmmaker Fernando Meirelles each won an award for excellence in cinema. The opening film at the festival was Geetu Mohandas' Moothon.

Juries and selection committees for different categories of films from Indian, international as well as short films consisted of actors, directors and film critics from not only Indian cinema but also from overseas. One of the films that stood out was Prateek Vats' film Eeb Allay Ooo! The film is about a young migrant who takes up the job of mimicking langurs in Delhi. Eeb Allay Ooo! also won the Young Critics’ Choice Award along with the prestigious Golden Gateway Award. India actor Geetanjali Rao's animated film Bombay Rose won high praises for its execution and the India Gold award at the festival.

On a powerful note

In collaboration with Netflix India, the festival celebrated the evolving role of women in Indian storytelling. The Women In Films initiative was supported by noted celebrity women such as Shabana Azmi, Sonali Bendre, Swara Bhaskar, Sona Mohapatra, Guneet Monga, Tisca Chopra, Mithila Palkar, Sapna Bhavnani and Tahira Kashyap among others. Festival director and critic Anupama Chopra said that she feels proud to celebrate women creators and wants to empower and encourage more women to help find their artistic voice.

The MAMI tribute was dedicated to legendary filmmaker Mrinal Sen as his works were a celebration of the spirit of cinema and art itself. The festival ended with chairperson Deepika Padukone's speech and the screening of Tushar Hiranandani's Bhumi Pednekar-Taapsee Pannu starrer Saand ki Aankh. The next MAMI Mumbai film festival will be held from November 5 to 12 in 2020.
