SECUNDERABAD: Close to a quarter of the accident black spots in the twin cities are in and around Secunderabad, revealed a recent survey by the Hyderabad police. Police identified 60 accident black spots across the twin cities this year, of which 13 are in Secunderabad. Black spots are stretches notorious for accidents or where accidents have historically been concentrated.
Among those identified in Secunderabad, the stretch between BB Gurumurthy Swimming Pool and Park Lane junction takes the top spot. The stretch falls under Mahankali and Begumpet police station limits.
The second most dangerous black spot is the YMCA Junction, between SBH Junction and Clock Tower, while the HPS, Begumpet black spot (the stretch from Prakash Nagar to Maharshi College), was identified as the third most dangerous road.

Police said that speeding, pedestrians crossing the roads at will, merging and de-merging of road at the start and end of flyovers and lack of proper signage at these spots were the reasons behind the accidents.
"With the help of GHMC, we will have to put up signages and raise the height of medians to prevent pedestrians from crossing the roads at random points. To slow down vehicles, rumble strips will be installed along with zebra crossings at select spots," said additional CP, traffic, Hyderabad, Anil Kumar.
On the YMCA junction black spot stretch, police said that over-speeding, rash driving and haphazard parking and signal-jumping caused the accidents. This stretch also has multiple junctions and the Jubilee Bus Station that attracts large crowds.

"We have advised bus drivers to stop the buses only in bus bays. Constables and home guards are posted at the bus station and other junctions on this stretch to prevent accidents," said Gopalapuram traffic inspector, A Srinivas. The inspector added that due to the pathetic condition of roads, which worsened during the monsoon, several two-wheeler riders were prone to skidding and injuries.
"At Oliphant bridge, the road condition is poor. Whenever it rains, our teams of traffic police must keep clearing the water and filling potholes between Oliphant bridge and Chilakalguda," added Srinivas.
On the HPS, Begumpet black spot stretch, police identified wrong-side driving, jaywalking, people crossing the roads at random points and lack of road markings as the reasons for accidents.
"We have been posting cops to prevent wrong-side driving during peak hours. We will also mark zebra crossings and put up road signage at the identified spots to prevent accidents," said the additional commissioner.
