HYDERABAD: Extended monsoon has destroyed kharif crops, mostly paddy, across 1.20 lakh acres in the state. Over 5,600 farmers in 4,022 mandals bore the brunt of the incessant rains, according to a report submitted by the agriculture department to the state government.
The crops, the report said, would have been ready for harvest in one to 10 weeks.

The crop damage was maximum in Suryapet district with 29,000 acres getting affected.
The first harvest of cotton during the kharif managed to survive and was sold by farmers in the market, however, the remaining crop was damaged. “Due to the crop damage, we could not get minimum support price for our crop,” said K Sekhar Reddy, a farmer from Warangal.
Apart from Suryapet, crops in 25,595 acres in Karimnagar, 8,730 acres in Nizamabad and 8,354 acres in Peddapalli were inundated. Of 33 districts in the state, crops in 18 districts, including Adilabad, Nirmal, Mancherial, Jangaon, Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri, Bhadradri, Jaishankar-Bhupalpally and Jagityal districts were damaged to a large extent. Official sources said that it was difficult to ascertain the exact extent of crop damage.

“Monsoon usually retreats by September-end, but heavy rains in October, when farmers take their produce to agriculture markets, can cause significant damage to crops. We have taken up an enumeration exercise to identify the farmers who are under loan burden and get them covered under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana,” agriculture commissioner Rahul Bojja told TOI.
Under the crop insurance scheme, the insured farmer has to intimate the extent of crop damage to the respective insurance company through toll-free numbers within 72 hours.
As per rules, officials of the insurance company, along with agriculture department officials and the insured farmer, visit the damaged agriculture field for assessing the crop damage due to hailstorm.
