Delhi: Returning from CP laser show, man and son mowed down by SUV, driver on the run

Returning home after watching the laser show at Connaught Place, a 40-year-old Nepalese man and his minor son died after they were hit by an SUV at Maharaja Ranjit Singh flyover Monday night. Heera and his son Kishore were on a bicycle, said police, adding that they have identified the car and are probing the matter.

Witnesses claimed they saw a white Creta hit the bicycle at the flyover, and the impact was such that the boy was flung in the air and landed 10 feet away. Bystanders tried to stop the car, but the driver fled. The victims were rushed to Lok Nayak Hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival.

Family members of the victims said Kishore, who lived with his relatives in Nepal, had come to the capital a week ago to visit his parents during Diwali.

“Kishore was excited about the laser show, and asked his father to take him there. They left the house around 9 pm, accompanied by friends. Heera called me after he dropped his friends… I was waiting for them at home when police informed me about the accident,” said Reena (35), Heera’s wife.

A case was registered at IP Estate police station. A senior police officer said, “We received a call around 12.30 am about the incident from the hospital. The victims had succumbed to their injuries after the car hit them. A damaged bicycle and a piece of the car’s licence plate were recovered from the spot. We have identified the car and its owner, and will soon make an arrest. We are yet to identify the person driving the car.”

The family had been living in the Railway Colony, near the BJP headquarters at Barakhamba Road, for the past 10 years. Heera worked at a car wash company. “Kishore was living with his uncle in Nepal for many years. We were trying to get him admitted to a school in Delhi next year,” said Reena.
