With a well-marked low pressure area over the Arabian Sea that has become a depression, the Lakshadweep Islands and parts of Kerala can expect heavy to very heavy rainfall, the IMD said on October 30.
The IMD has issued red alerts for “extremely heavy rainfall” (above 20.4 cms in 24 hours) for the Lakshadweep Islands on Wednesday and Thursday.
Several districts of Kerala can expect isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall on Wednesday, according to the IMD. IMD issued orange alerts for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Idukki and Malappuram.
With the seas rough, fishermen have been asked to stay away from the Kanyakumari-Maldives-Lakshadweep region and off the Kerala and south Karnataka coasts during the next 48 hours.
By Thursday, the depression is likely to move northwestwards across Lakshadweep Islands and intensify into a deep depression.
