NEW DELHI: Your favourite tandoori dishes - kebabs, naans and smoked vegetables - are also adding to the city's hazardous air. Though banned in Delhi, many restaurants and dhabas still use tandoors, traditional ovens, prompting the municipal corporations to crack down on the errant establishments to check these local pollution sources.
Since October 18, South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has destroyed 313 tandoors and issued challans to 213 restaurants using charcoal/wood-fired ovens.
"Due to severe deterioration in air quality, the use of tandoors has been restricted as per the directives of Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC). These can't be used without emission channelisation and control systems as they add to particulate matters," a public health official said on Thursday.
The maximum number of tandoors has been found in West zone (105), followed by Najafgarh zone (102). On the other hand, the highest number of errant high-end restaurants and eateries has been found in South zone (69) followed by Central (62).
In South zone, the hotspots include RK Puram area near Hyatt, Green Park, Vasant Vihar, Vasant Kunj, Chhatarpur and Saket while in Central zone, these are Lajpat Nagar, Defence Colony, Okhla Industrial Area-I, Mohan Estate, Nehru Nagar, Sriniwaspuri and NFC market. Najafgarh zone has four hotspots at Dwarka, Nangli, Kapashera and Najafgarh Road, and key West zone areas are Punjabi Bagh, Vikaspuri, Rajouri Garden, Basaidarapur and Mayapuri.
North Delhi Municipal Corporation has destroyed over 50 tandoors and is also issuing challans, an official said. East Delhi Municipal Corporation, however, refused to share any data.
As per a June 2018 notification by DPCC, the permitted fuels in Delhi include liquefied petroleum gas, biogas and compressed natural gas.
