NCP CHIEF Sharad Pawar will embark on a tour of Marathwada next week to assess the damage caused by unseasonal rainfall that have hit the region.

Pawar, who will be in the region from November 6, will visit Parbhani, Nanded and Hingoli districts. Unseasonal rain in parts of Konkan, Vidarbha and Marath-wada has caused massive damage to crops. The visit by Pawar is being seen as yet another effort by the NCP to play the role of an active Opposition in the state.

Pawar, during a meeting with party legislators on Wednesday, had spoken about the need for the NCP cadre to be aggressive in raising issues like job losses and agrarian distress that seem to be affecting large parts of the state.

“They (BJP-Shiv Sena) need to form the government. We will be sitting in the Opposition. The state is going through a difficult time, unseasonal rain has created a wet drought. We will need to take up issues that are affecting people. In the absence of a government, we will soon meet the Governor and apprise him of the situation,” he had said.

The NCP has also demanded that the government declare a wet drought in the state and provide monetary relief to affected farmers. “Unseasonal rainfall has caused loss to farmers in the state. To ensure that immediate relief is provided to farmers, the state needs to declare a wet drought. The closure of factories is also caus-ing unemployment. To address these issues and look into possible methods of providing relief, we and our allies have sought a meeting with the Governor,” NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said.
