PATNA: Criminals shot at an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) during a raid at village Haripur Tinkonwa under Murliganj police station area in Madhepura district on Thursday. One of the criminals involved in the firing was arrested while two others managed to escape.
ASI Shyam Dev Thakur was rushed to a nearby primary health centre (PHC) from where he was shifted to Madhepura Sadar hospital.
Thakur, who is in his early 50s, was leading the police team to arrest some criminals allegedly involved in a murder a day before at Murliganj. However, as soon as police started chasing the criminals, they opened fire and a bullet hit Thakur's leg.
The criminals fired several rounds but, surprisingly, the policemen did not return the fire, sources said.
On getting information, Madhepura SP Sanjay Kumar reached the spot and conduct raids in several villages.
When contacted, the SP told TOI that one criminal was arrested from the village with two country-made pistols and six live cartridges. "His two associates were also hiding in the village when the police conducted the raid. But they managed to escape. The arrested criminal is being interrogated," the SP said and confirmed that police did not fire a single shot.
He said one Sanjeev Yadav was murdered at Kolhaipatti under Murliganj police station area on Wednesday and police raid was aimed at arresting the criminals involved in the murder.
Meanwhile, Dr KK Das of the Sadar hospital said the ASI was out of danger as the bullet had pierced through his right thigh. "The bullet didn't cause any bone or nerve injury. His condition is stable," he said.
