Police rescued a four-day-old baby girl, whose family members were planning to bury it near the Jubilee Bus Station at Secunderabad on Thursday morning, allegedly assuming that the newborn was dead.
Marredpally police admitted the baby to Gandhi Hospital where treatment is being provided to her.
Alert auto driver
Police stated that when an auto driver was attending nature’s call near the Jubilee bus depot around 9 a.m. on Thursday, he saw two persons with a bag digging a pit. Suspecting something wrong, he alerted a police constable.
Police rushed to the spot and found a baby girl inside the bag. Police said, “After it came to our notice, we immediately went to the location and found the baby in a bag.”
One among the duo, from Karimnagar, reportedly informed that the newborn was her granddaughter, who died due to a failed operation. They stated that since the body would not be allowed in public transport, they decided to bury her and had started to dig a pit as a result.
However, upon checking, police found that the baby girl was still alive. The newborn was immediately rushed to Gandhi Hospital for treatment. Police took the two persons into custody and are investigating the case.
The newborn is undergoing treatment in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the hospital. Surgeries would be taken up to correct ambiguous genitalia and to correct the position of urinary bladder.
Police suspect it to be a case of female foeticide.
