Singh said his friend first told him about Akhtar: “He said Akhtar was an IAS officer who could help us get government jobs. Akhtar showed us appointment letters of his wife and other people, saying he had helped them in the past. In December 2004, we met him and he asked for Rs 20 lakh for a job as a clerk and Rs 10 lakh for a job as a peon.”

“In 2007, Akhtar demanded more money. A year after that, he told us we have been selected for the jobs. Later, we found there were no such jobs…,” said Singh.

Festive offer

In 2018, Akhtar gave Singh an affidavit promising to return the money. When he didn’t, the family approached police.
