Cyclone Maha is likely to be the second cyclone to cause rain over Maharashtra within a week. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), cyclone Maha formed in the Arabian Sea on October 31 will lead to overcast conditions and clouding during the next week over western coast of the state.

Located off Lakshadweep and 410 km from the Goa coast, cyclone Maha is initially expected to trace similar path that of cyclone Kyarr that had formed off Ratnagiri coast on October 25. The system had brought light to moderate rain over Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada during this period.

“The rainfall activity will reduce and remain light intensity till November 4 but thereafter, the intensity may see a marginal increase due to cyclone Maha. As per the weather models, this cyclone will recurve towards south Gujarat and in case that occurs, then there are chances of increased rainfall over northern districts of Maharashtra next week,” said Anupam Kashyapi, head, weather department at IMD, Pune.

Some of the districts that may experience cloudy sky accompanied by light to moderate rainfall in the upcoming week include Pune, Nashik, Nandurbar, Dhule, Jalgaon, Palghar and some adjoining areas in south Gujarat.

In the pre-monsoon season, rainfall recorded in the state was between 83mm and 325mm surplus and this season is turning out to be one of the wettest post-monsoon seasons in a decade.
