A migrating tiger is believed to have attacked five persons in Hingoli district of Marathawada on Saturday.
The tiger, a two-year-old male from Yavatmal district’s Tipeshwsr Sanctuary has been on the move for the past few months and has traveled about 200 km covering Kawal sanctuary in the neighboring Telangana and Penganga sanctuary in Yavatmal district before being seen in Hingoli on Thursday. Incidentally, this is believed to be the first tiger sighting in Marathwada after about four decades.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife) Nitin Kakodkar told The Indian Express, “it was radio-collated in February and since then we have been tracking its movement. On Saturday, an attack was reported on a group of men, in which one person had claw marks on his back. He is now fine and others didn’t get any serious injury.”
“We have deployed a monitoring team to keep watch on his movement to prevent any further such attack. Actually, during the past several months, it has moved close to human settlements but hasn’t caused any alarm. So we need to study the circumstances of today’s incident to find out why he must have attacked the group” he added.
