UP police: 3 held for ‘gangrape’ in Chitrakoot

The alleged incident occurred on October 28 but a case was registered only on Friday, a day after a video clip of the crime surfaced on social media, sources said.

Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Chitrakoot district on Saturday arrested three men for allegedly raping a 25-year-old woman while she was on her way to a relative’s house in the district.

The alleged incident occurred on October 28 but a case was registered only on Friday, a day after a video clip of the crime surfaced on social media, sources said.

Based on the victim’s complaint, an FIR was registered against four persons, apart from two unidentified persons, at the local police station. Medical examination of the woman was done and the report was awaited, police said Saturday.

Chitrakoot Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar Jha identified the three arrested suspects as Dejay, Kuldeep and ‘Kartoos’. A search was on for the other accused, who are all in their 20s, said Jha.

According to Jha, the victim, along with a family member, went to the local police station and informed them about the incident. They mentioned that they decided to approach the police after a video of the crime surfaced on social media, said Jha.

He added that the victim told police that on October 28, she was going to a relative’s house along with another family member when four youths intercepted them. They forcibly took her to a secluded spot and raped her. She told police that her relative fled the spot. She alleged that the accused also took away her belongings, including her cellphone, said Jha.

According to the police, the woman returned home later but did not tell anyone about the incident.

Incidentally, on Thursday, the state government transferred Manoj Kumar Jha as Superintendent of Police, Railway (Prayagraj) as part of a routine rejig. The government has directed Ankit Mittal to join as Superintendent of Police, Chitrakoot. Mittal and Jha are yet to join their new postings.
