Tiger travels 200 km to Marathwada, attacks 5 persons

A tiger from Yavatmal district’s Tipeshwar Sanctuary reportedly travelled around 200 km to Hingoli district of Marathwada where it attacked five persons Saturday, officials said.

Reported to be on the move for the past few months, the two-year-old male tiger has covered Kawal sanctuary in neighboring Telangana and Penganga sanctuary in Yavatmal district before it was sighted in Hingoli on Thursday, officials said. This is said to be the first tiger sighting in Marathwada after about four decades, they said.

“The tiger was radio-collated in February and since then we have been tracking its movement. On Saturday, an attack on a group of men was reported. One person sustained an injury on his back in the incident. The victim is now fine, while others didn’t sustain any serious injury,” Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife) Nitin Kakodkar said.
