SECUNDERABAD: People around RK Puram lake have been complaining that the ground water level has fallen substantially in their areas after the lake has been emptied. The lake was drained as part of the desilting process, but work has come to a standstill since a month as claimants to the land say they will not allow any further activity.
“Residents of colonies like Devinagar, Sainiknagar, Seetaramnagar, who have had open wells are seeing them go dry,” said BT Srinivasan, general secretary, United Federation of Resident Welfare Associations.

Confirming the situation, GK Nagesh, a resident of Devinagar, said, “We had a proper well which was about 20 feet deep. Since the time it was made 27 years ago, there has been no water problem. It is only after R K Puram lake was drained that the well almost went dry.” Nagesh has been more fortunate than others as his well filled up again after the recent rains. His neighbour was forced to dig a borewell to meet their water needs.
Irrigation officials say most of the work has been completed. “We have finished 70% of the work including desilting and removal of water hyacinth, but people have claimed patta land on the lake bed because of which we cannot complete the work,” said Khursheed Moinuddin, executive engineer, irrigation department.
