NASHIK: A truck with failed brakes collided with eight vehicles at Kasara Ghat on the Mumbai-Agra highway leaving at least 15 people injured on Sunday morning.
The incident came to light when passengers travelling on the route witnessed the accident and informed the highway police, who immediately sprung to action. Ambulances were rushed to the spot and the injured people were taken to a nearby hospital.
The police also arranged for cranes to remove the damaged vehicles from the highway.
The traffic on the highway was paralysed for more than seven hours, forcing the highway police to open the adjacent old Kasara Ghat road for public. The old road was closed due to repair works. The highway police put up barricades around the under-construction stretch of the old road and allowed traffic movement on the other side.
API Amol Walzade of the highway police said two people suffered serious injuries in the accident.
The accident, that unfolded over a period of 15 minutes, occurred at around 9 am. The brakes of the truck carrying iron rods from Nashik towards Mumbai failed while it was passing the Kasara Ghat area. The driver lost control of the vehicle and hit eight vehicles before coming to a standstill.
More than 100 police personnel from Nashik, Kasara, Igatpuri, Thane and Shahapur, including the highway police, was deployed to clear the traffic jam.
